AI label art: what it does, and what it costs
How label art generation works, why three of the four decoration modes don't call the AI at all, the steer input, and the per-hour limits on image generation.

Generate on Label Studio asks an image model for label art in your brand palette. Whether it actually calls a model at all depends on your Brand Kit's decoration mode — and that's the single biggest thing to understand about this feature.
Only one mode paints
Of the four decoration modes, only Full-bleed art puts generated art on the label. The other three — Accent icon, Border / frame, Emblem / crest — compose the label from your palette, your type and a motif; they never read a generated image.
So when your Brand Kit is set to one of those three, Hi Ellie skips the image call entirely. You still press Generate, you still get a label, it's just composed rather than painted. Generating pictures nothing would ever render was pure waste, so it doesn't happen.
The practical consequence runs the other way from what you might expect: a new Brand Kit starts on Full-bleed art, which is the one mode that bills. If you want AI art, that's already the setting. If you don't, switch to one of the two recommended modes — Accent icon or Border / frame — and Generate stops calling the model.
Steering it
In Full-bleed mode you get a short steer input — a mood, a season, a direction, up to 220 characters. It's not there in the other modes, because it would have no effect on a composed label and a control that does nothing is worse than no control.
One generate produces up to four variants; pick one, or roll again.
What Label Studio shows you while it works
The studio has explicit states rather than a spinner that means anything: idle, generating, ready (with the preview), or failed — and a failed generation gives you a Retry rather than an empty frame. An art-less generation goes straight to ready; there's nothing to wait for.
The limits
Image generation is metered per image, not per press — a request for four variants counts as four. There are two buckets, and a request has to clear both:
- 120 images per hour for the workspace.
- 60 images per hour for you personally.
A batch that would cross a cap is denied whole, without spending part of your allowance on it. Cross one anyway and you get a rate-limit response, not a partial generation.
There is no plan bypass on this one. Beta and paid workspaces are metered the same as everyone else — image generation is genuinely expensive, and a cap that only applies to some workspaces isn't a cap.
If the generator is momentarily busy you get "The art generator is busy right now — wait a few seconds and try again" — that's a queue, not your limit.
What the art is not
The art is decoration. It never carries your product name, your business details, your lot code or your net weight — those are the second layer, composed from your Brand Kit and your batch, and Label Studio shows them as a separate locked step: "Product name, scent, and studio wordmark — pulled from your recipe and Brand Kit."
That separation is deliberate. A generated image is allowed to be wrong; a lot code is not. See Ingredient statements and compliance.
Custom motifs
The non-painting modes use a motif — a small mark above or around your product name. There's a library of them, and you can have Ellie draft a custom one from a description. Motif generation has its own hourly cap (30 per workspace, 15 per person), separate from image generation.
